Are you a saver or a spender?
What are the distinct characteristics of these two? Being frugal means being in control of the lavish spending and being able to make savings for future use. It also pertains to having control over the desire to acquire material wants. Instead of the desire for pleasure, the focus is more in obtaining things that are deemed very necessary. A frugal person goes after more for his needs and less for his wants. And because he has the control for spending he is likely to attain surplus on his earnings.
Frugality is oftentimes considered to be one of the virtues to become a millionaire or billionaire. You can emulate the character of Ingvar Kamprad who has become a billionaire not only for his entrepreneurial qualities but is also for his known frugality.
Ingvar Kamprad is the 4th richest man in the world as of the time of this writing. Although extremely wealthy, he is reported to fly on an economy class and is known for eating a cheap meal during his visit at IKEA, his company.
Kamprad’s frugality is widely reported and published. Though frugal, he is also known for owning several estates in different countries. I think, it would be appropriate to see and utilize the fruits of one’s labor no matter how known you are for being thrifty and wise saver.
If you would like to make great savings, it would require you to be thrift. Instead of going after the expensive things, you prefer for practical ones. Rather than buying the signature brands, you purchase the less expensive ones.
There are a lot of differences of being a saver or a spender and between a spender and a saver. Being a saver means being in control of the spending. Although a saver can have the same or similar wants of a spender, the former prefers to make savings before he can finally acquire his wants. He is more concerned of meeting his personal needs and is likely to defer consumption in order to make savings.
On the other hand, a spender goes after his passion to acquire the things that he wants. He may have concerns for his personal needs. However, he normally goes after the things that he wants no matter what means he can use to get his desires.
Moreover, a spender who is an income-earner normally squanders his income without leaving a few amounts for savings. He is likely to spend things that are beyond his financial capacity. Oftentimes, we associate a spender as a debtor for it is highly probable that they can incur borrowing to satisfy his craving for his wants.
The popularity of credit card for cashless purchases nowadays has made the lifestyle of many people to be lavish and, to a certain degree, wasteful. Although credit card has good use, most of the time, it encourages a person to make exuberant purchases without thinking for the means to settle the balances to be paid up in the future.
Spending is good to a certain degree. But you don’t have to be exuberant unless you have ample resources to acquire many things that you see and you instantly crave for.
Is it likely for a saver to become a spender? Yes, it is. For me, it is definite. It is a common situation for a saver to become a spender. What is the use of making savings if they are not utilized to acquire wants and desires? One of the purposes people save is to acquire things that they want to have in life. A saver can freely spend if his savings allow him to do so.
Although many savers go for investments, they always have the purpose to be rich. This separates a saver from a spender again. A saver longs for the long-term satisfaction while the spender concentrates on his wants in the short-term.
Now, are you a saver or a spender? You can shift your character from any of these two. But it would be preferred to be a saver first then become a spender. A saver can attain financial freedom in a constructive way while a spender is likely to save to pay up his debts.
