Capital Punishment: Fighting Off Crime Effectively

Capital Punishment: Fighting Off Crime Effectively

Chaos and order are inevitable two sides of the same coin. Sometimes, though, the line between these two is just too fine that a mere flap of a butterfly's wings is enough to influence on which side the coin would fall. And when it comes to chaos and order, crime is indeed one of the important aspects that intertwine both.

Sadly, crime is indeed part of any society nowadays. What's worse, the crimes being committed are getting more and more heinous in nature. This is primarily the reason why a lot of courts in countries all over the world are now implementing capital punishment. And the countries that have not yet implemented such are also considering it.

Why capital punishment, some people may ask? Well, why not? If you think about it, even the Bible promotes capital punishment to some extent! An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. That's the way the saying goes in the Bible, right? Of course, there are people who would say that this is just according to the Law of Moses, way back into the time of the Old Covenant. There are people who would also say that Jesus Christ himself rebuked this particular law, by saying ˇ°You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, but I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other to him also. This is according to the New Testament already.

Still, the crimes being committed are growing more and more violent! There was a time when a burglar would break into a house, just to steal off whatever valuables he can come up with. Now, burglars are no longer afraid to do more than just steal. There are a lot of burglars today who would go the extra mile and kill anyone who gets in their way. This is precisely why I am all for capital punishment.

Let me present the pros that I can easily come up with for my argument on
capital punishment. First would be the incapacitation of the person who committed the crime. With capital punishment, there would be one less criminal to worry about. And this can go a very long way because there is just no way of knowing how far a criminal would go these days.

There's also the matter of cost. We, law-abiding citizens, are actually the ones paying for the housing of these criminals through our taxes. I personally do not like the idea of a portion of my taxes going into the budget for these criminals. My tax payments could be spent for other more worthwhile purposes.

Retribution is another appealing aspect here, especially for the victims of the crime themselves. Let's face it: execution gives the victims the most effective rehabilitative treatment possible. Lifetime imprisonment only means the criminal is still alive while the victim is nursing the wounds of the crime that has been set upon him or her. Worse, if the crime involved were murder, then the victim would no longer enjoy seeing the criminal behind bars for the rest of his life. Even the families of the victim would find execution rehabilitative.

Deterrence is another aspect worth discussing. With the implementation of the death penalty, fear would be stirred amongst the many criminals all over the world. They would be discouraged from committing crimes, especially when execution is indeed carried out. Although today's cases show just a small proportion here, this would inevitably grow if the sentence would be effectively carried out in a consistent fashion. There would indeed be fewer crimes committed in the long run.

Of course, with capital punishment comes the fear that the one put to death are actually innocent of the crime they are sentenced for. Now, here comes the inevitable need to turn things around for the judicial system. Every nook and cranny has to be cleaned out to ensure that the sentence is properly and accordingly carried out. This might be hard to do, but it is certainly doable.

There is no chaos if there are no rules. Crime was not a crime at all. But because man is so evil there comes the law to prohibit man from doing it.

It is a fact that the majority of those executed in the States share the same basic profile: They are black men, Southern, poor and often mentally ill or of diminished mental capacity.

It actually costs more for us to house those on Death Row and then kill them, than for them to be kept incarcerated for the rest of their life. This is partly to do with lengthy appeals, but there are other reasons.

The Death Penalty has not been a deterrent for those that commit the most heinous crimes. I volunteer in a prison. Most of the population is behind bars due to addiction issues.

Perhaps we'd do better to focus on improving life for those at risk on the outside. The money we'd save from ridding ourselves of the blight of the Death Rows, could be re-invested into better schools and after-school activities, job training and life-skills classes.

Capital punishment today is meted out only in the "rarest of the rare" cases where the cruelty is unmatched and where the perpetrator is known without doubt. I think already checks and balances are built into the judicial system to give this only when it is really warranted. I think we are okay with things the way they are.

I completely disagree that capital punishment is a good solution to "crime". Its important to look at what contributes to people committing "crimes" and work on rectifying that. Otherwise how is capital punishment going to stop it happen? History has been full of capital punishment, and crime has been part of human history for as long as humans have defined it. For as long as people are attached to their own well being in exclusion to other life there will be crime. The root of this is ignorance, how can you murder an ignorant being and call it justice? Capital punishment is a crime, it is murder.

People can not get back what they have lost, everything in the conditioned world is impermanant, its the fact that people cling and believe things to be permenant that causes suffering. To loose a loved one to murder is a difficult thing, but you will not bring back the loved one by killing the murderer, I also don't see how you would feel better about it after the murder was executed - because now there is blood on your hands too. Your ego might think its great, but the soul knows its not.

Secondly the people that commit crimes are themselves suffering and eventually when they die they will experience in full the suffering they caused others. And so will we all, no-one is innocent.

So people think they are "good" people if they follow the rules of a soceity and the conscience of a soceity but then they still participate in things where animals are slaughtered, support their country men going to war and killing other people, murder bugs if they invade their homes, buy things that are not fair trade that support class differences and even contribute to the stealing of resources from other countries. This is what capatilism and consumerism encourages.

The real problem people need to face is lack of compassion and wisdom, and people will only learn these tools through applying themselves to working through their inner ignorances.

Prisons can be great places if they were set-up right to help people rehabilitate.

As far as being concerned about money supporting those who commit crimes, how about the
money you give to the governments who commit crimes by supporting corporations that rape the earth? Or all the money that goes into war, which is CRIME.

All we really need for survival is resources, and the biggest crimes are committed by those people who claim to "own" resources.

This is long, but I have felt very strongly since birth that capital punishment is very childish solution and cringe when anyone supports it.

First off the person who done the crime has to be the one who wants to be rehabilitated. He has to be the one that wants to change. No one can do it for him. That money that goes into war is how we have managed to keep our freedom. Just like anything else it has its pros and cons. But I for one believe in capital punishment.

This is by far one of the most ridiculous comments I have read. No disrespect intended, for everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but seriously, that article showed what lack of intelligence you have. Besides all of the grammatical errors and misspelling issues, what was so hilarious is that I could tell you were wrapped around a tree when you were writing this. The paragraph where you begin with "So people think they are good"...wow. Okay, so in your opinion, everyone should be vegetarians and let all animals roam freely around our grounds, end all war alltogether and stop standing up for our families, our nations, and our rights, let our homes become infested with termites and other critters (we are better people for sharing our homes with them, right?), and stop using oil and other resources necessary to our survival just to please you. and all your other friends who gather around that tree. BUT, after you say we don't need resources, you contradict yourself three paragraphs later by saying resources are all we need. So, if we don't have the resources, but we need them to survive, then what do you propose we do? Back to the main issue which you so terribly managed to continue swaying off subject just to throw your two cents in about how terrible the world is because they don't all agree with you and your friends, Criminals belong in prisons, which is where they should remain unless significant change is noticed in the individual. People can change, whether it's in prison or on the streets, wherever it may be the person has to want to change, not made to change. And if prisons were ever set up to be wonderful places, what would be the point of sending the most horrid of criminals to one? It would be a life of luxury. You don't think that would be a costly burden on the people and their wallets? Seriously come on now. While the issue of enforcing the death penalty is a touchy issue, everyone has their own opinions drawn from their own opinions based on their own opinions. No one can take that away from people, and I understand that, and I respect that. But before people go and run their mouth about what they think and feel, make sure you at least know how to say it where it makes sense and is at least spelled correctly. Not everyone clings to trees, therefore a little sign of an education can better persuade people to go along with an argument...or not.
By the way, kudos on being one of the only people I know who could form an opinion on capital punishment as soon as they popped out of mommy. That must be a real accomplishment.

@EmeeraMoon ... why don't you write an article yourself. You seem to have so many points to share but lack enough space.

Anyway, you have a voice and a vote but as our gov't have the duty to protect its citizens from deadly criminals. Why give them the chance to kill again ?
The voice of the majority is the law so whether its capital punishment or life incarceration, the point is to deter heinous crimes.

The cost is worth to protect the people.

the content is fair, but there are several grammatical mistakesthat should have been corrected. futhermore, it appears that the author did very little research into capital punishment, but rather expressed his own rather uninformed opinions.
