Global Warming: The Most Pressing Environmental Problem Today

There are so many environmental concerns that the leaders of nations are currently addressing. One of the more pressing ones is global warming. Indeed, global warming is not just some issue that one can set aside for later reference. This is because the problem has been in existence for so many years now; so long that we have already started to experience its alarming effects. These alarming effects are of the global sense as well, so it is of import that the world leaders gather round and do whatever it takes to come up with a feasible solution fast.

Everyone who has access to news channels from whichever part of the world should be aware of the rampage Hurricane Katrina brought about America. You just might also know of the ironic beginnings of this hurricane whose power grew exponentially in just a matter of days! Hurricane Katrina had the strength of the Atlantic Ocean backing her up during the last part of August. But it was not that strong when it started out. In fact, when Katrina left Florida, it was just a Category 1 hurricane. But during the next few days, Katrina gained more strength as she crossed the Gulf’s very warm waters, and became a Category 5 hurricane virtually overnight! And what destruction Katrina brought onto the affected states!

Environmentalists have been trying to determine if there’s a connection between this sudden power boost Katrina had and the existing global warming problem. Studies have been conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and from these studies, it has been determined that for the last 30 years, the intensity levels of hurricanes have experienced significant changes. These levels are even pegged to have been doubled! Furthermore, during these years, there have also been significant increases when it came to ocean surface temperature. It was also during these years when the temperature of the ocean surface was able to reach record breaking levels. Warmer oceans are very strong indications of global warming. And the warmer oceans become over time, the stronger hurricanes will become. More destruction can only be caused by such catastrophes unless we do something about this.

Heat-trapping emissions are largely to blame for this pressing problem of global warming. These emissions come from cars that burn fossil fuels, power plants that give off carbon dioxide, and so many more. These emissions actually act as a large blanket over the atmosphere of our planet and traps heat in. This, in turn, causes ocean to absorb the excess heat that is trapped within the planet. And if the world leaders won’t do something to thwart this wheel that has been set in motion, then we are surely on the path towards a major worldly crisis!

Of all the environmental concerns today, global warming certainly takes the gist of everything. This is because if not solved, then global warming would act as some sort of Pandora’s Box, which will unleash one natural disaster after another. Worse, this is the element of nature that we would be dealing with. There really is no telling what nature is capable of. Sure, we have computer simulations to give us predictions and projected paths of whatever natural disasters that might occur. But there is still no foolproof way of knowing.

President Bush and the other officials that hold high offices in other countries have got to come up with solutions regarding emissions that trap heat within the planet. Now, there are some world leaders who believe that there are other problems that are more pressing than global warming. Poverty and the diminishing sources of oil are prime examples. But what are these problems when compared to the very strong forces of nature? The destructive effects of such hurricanes would only bring more poverty and more oil problems as well. Thus, it is of much import indeed that world leaders address the issue of global warming once and for all.
