Environmental Art

Art dealing with ecological issues made its first appearance in the 1960s when the movement associated with the environment first started making its presence felt. It first appeared as sculpture and as land art more in dealing with environmental issues that could be addressed through these ideas. It is also now associated with sustainable art, where the mediums used are those that use natural processes and do not take or put any burden on the environment. This is called Sustainable Art.

There is a distinction between environmental artists who represent environmental ideas as art without in any way considering whether the medium or means that are use contravene broad environmental guidelines, and those who insist that their art works besides presenting ideas also stress on the fact that their execution does not in any way harm the environment.

Some artists have executed huge environmental art works which have involved a lot of changes in the landscape they have worked on while trying to represent their environmental ideas to viewers. It is a moot point whether such art can be called truly environmental, as they have in some ways contributed to the destruction of the landscape and probable pollution.

There
have been others who have confined their art to rearranging natural materials, whether they be stones, mud, branches or such things to form objects of their own artistic ideas, and these may be said to true works of environmental art, as no changes are made or pollution caused.

A lot of environmental artists have fashioned sculpture with the use of discarded items and some have even roamed the world to find truly awesome examples in nature and its formations which could be represented as art. Art pieces in discarded window glass have turned out true visual masterpieces that are an art form to be treasured.

Some of the recent buildings that have been designed to be ecologically friendly can also be considered as representatives of environmental art. These buildings take advantage of natural processes such as the movement of the sun, local wind conditions and other factors to design buildings that reduce their carbon footprints. Others are striving to design buildings that will consume energy only from renewable sources and these can be called the true harbingers of environmental art and its effect on the architecture of the future.

In its way, such environmental art has helped to bring to the forefront concern for the ecology and uses its influence to inspire others to practice what they preach.

Very informative. I think that the traditional paintings have eco-freindly as they have natural colours and not chemical-generated colours.
