The Quest In Becoming Eco-Friendly

Many people all over the world are not that comfortable at the idea of becoming active when it comes to environmental issues. Truth be told, there are just so many negative connotations linked to becoming environmental activists that people just cannot help but be put off somehow. Plus, we have all sorts of reasons on our side. So many things to do, so little time to do them. In fact, I’m pretty sure that even your very own jobs have more weight than environmental concerns right now.

But let us face it: there is indeed a need to rearrange our priorities here. The effects of global warming are becoming as clear-cut as ever. Hurricane Katrina, for instance, was a catastrophe that even one of the strongest nations in the world was not totally ready for. Such preparation could have saved hundreds of lives, in retrospective. But what can one do about it now, you might ask.

There are actually a lot of things all of us can still do! It does not really take a person having millions of dollars in funds to help in the quest of becoming more environmentally conscious these days. Ordinary people, like you and me, can do so much in becoming more eco-friendly in our daily routines. Yes, there is indeed a need to be more eco-friendly. And yes, we are quite late in taking that first step already, with the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina looming over us. But we can still do so much to help solve the pressing problem of global warming. And the time to do just that has come.

Yes, I can understand why there are negative connotations linked with becoming environmental activists. You surely must have seen demonstrations at airports or train stations, where such activists would block these places with their protests. Some would even go as far as lying down naked on the runways or the railroad tracks! These activists are merely doing what they deem as right in serving their purpose. Besides, they do have more than valid reasons for such demonstrations, right? If these would not just hamper the operations of airports and train stations, then people would not hesitate to join these activists. But we all have different opinions on the matter, and this is something we all will have to respect.

Still, you really cannot deny the pressing need to become more eco-friendly. Here are some scenarios that just might help you grasp this need. First is aeroplane pollution. You may not be aware about this but airplanes are actually one of the leading sources of greenhouse gases. A mere flight to Sydney, Australia would already have a plane emitting 5.6 tonnes of CO2. And this is for each passenger! On the average, this is actually the emission of CO2 of each household in a complete year! Now, how many passengers are there in a single flight to Sydney? And how many flights to Sydney are there in a day? How about the other flights to and from Sydney? In a global perspective, it is really quite a surprise that Hurricane Katrina is just one of the very few natural disasters that really opened our eyes to the hazards global warming can bring us.

You can help save the planet in your own little way right inside your household! For instance, the mere act of lowering the thermostat in your by even just a degree can go a long, long way. This gives you a significant decrease in your emissions of greenhouse gases in a year. You just might want to start thinking about that.

Also, you should be vigilant about the appliances that you use. You just might be surprised at how much power is wasted when appliances you are not really using are kept on. Thus, you should avoid unnecessary usage of these appliances as much as possible. You can even ask your whole family to be vigilant as well.

These are just some of the many things you can try for yourself. To know more, just go online and check the many sources on the topic. There are also many articles that just might open your eyes a bit wider.
