United States: A Women President?

United States: A Women President?

Looking at the stats and figures, there are actually a lot more female voters than male voters in America. And if you would go through every city of every state, you would also notice how the figure of female voters would exceed that of male voters. Well, this is not necessarily true for all cities and states. But the figure is just too significant to discount here.

This brings me to the quite ironic fact that there are fewer female candidates running for office in the American government. Even more ironic is the fact that the US was very eager in battling the regime of the Taliban in Afghanistan. The irony here is pretty obvious, since the Taliban is known to be against female participation in the national government of Afghanistan. However, I am not saying that America is not pro-democracy when it comes to its constituents running for office because there are certainly a number of successful female candidates who are pretty efficient in running their offices. Still, it is pretty interesting to note the fact that there are just to few females holding offices in the US government.

But let us go straight to the top of the hierarchy, which is the position of the President, of course. The Bush administration has been the subject of a lot of controversies, for the most part of its regime. Because of this, we cannot help but ask ourselves whether or not a female president could do a better job running the nation.

Looking at this from a global perspective, you would actually see that there are indeed a lot of prominent women running a number of nations as well. Sri Lanka is not new to this having one of the most influential females in the history of their government. Mrs. Sirimavo Ratwate Dias Bandaranaike became the world’s first ever Prime Minister, who advocated democracy and women’s rights all throughout her regime.

The Philippines has had a lot of successful female presidents as well, with Corazon Aquino being one of the victorious ones. In fact, it was under her administration that the Philippines experienced full democracy for the first time. And these are not just the countries that have had successful female leaders! Other countries include Bangladesh, Canada, Dominica, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, Norway, and United Kingdom.

So, why not America? Forums are bustling over the matter, with a lot of people saying America is indeed ready to take on a female president, as long as the candidate herself is worthy of the votes cast on her favor. In fact, some are even eyeing the possibility of a Condoleezza Rice vs. Hillary Clinton stint quite enthusiastically. Personally, I think Rice would make a better president than Clinton would, simply because of her background. Look at her resumé, if you would. Condoleezza Rice is known for her extremely diplomatic nature, and this is just one of the many reasons why she would make a good president for the US. What’s more, Rice is very fluent in so many languages, that communication would not be a problem for her at all. I am not putting Hillary Clinton down, since she does have a fair share in terms of political background. Still, Hillary Clinton’s resumé is not all that impressive when compared to that of Condoleezza Rice.

It would really be interesting to see a Rice vs. Hillary showdown for the 2008 Presidential Elections. But what really matters here is what the American people want, which is understandably progress for the country. Looking at present poll results, there are definitely more people gunning for Rice than for Clinton. But who knows, right? In the end, poll results would not even matter once the final figures have been tallied. But if I were in Rice’s position, given her background and political experience, I would definitely make a go for it. With strong poll results behind me, declining to run would indeed be a missed opportunity here.
