Unveiling The Truth About Wealth

If I may ask you, what would you do if you have a net worth of over one billion US dollars that you could freely spend?

You might want to buy a vast estate with similar in hectare and value with Kensington Palace Gardens of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal who bought the estate at 128 million US dollars. Or you might want to buy a yacht longer in length than Larry Ellison's Rising Sun or The Sheik of Dubai's Platinum/ Golden Star/ Dubai. If you have a billion dollars, right now, you might be driving Ferraris and Lamborghinis or might hoard a collection of paintings of renowned artists.

There are many pleasures that you could enjoy when you have over a billion dollars in your account. And I am sure that you could not be able to buy all that you want in a single day with such a huge amount of wealth you could have.

But what wealth is for? That's a striking question. The answer may be different when each person is asked. There can be a common denominator and that would be for material satisfaction. However, other people have other views about wealth.

Andrew Carnegie wrote an essay called The Gospel of Wealth, which narrated his belief about riches and proper utilization of wealth in the society. He stated on his essay that rich men should impart his wealth for the enrichment of the society.

In case you don't know him, Andrew Carnegie lived on the 19th century until the early 20th century. He started as a telegraph messenger boy. He became a self-made man by using his savings from the salary he earned working in a railroad company investing in a wide variety of railroad-related companies. When he became successful in his initial investments, he diversified his investment strategy to include oil, petroleum and iron industries. However, it was in steel industry that Carnegie made his vast fortune. The Carnegie Steel wa
s a profitable venture. This made him an industrialist and very wealthy.

Carnegie is one of the richest men in the world during his lifetime. According to many publications, the wealth of Carnegie is estimated to be more or less a hundred billion US dollars if his wealth is adjusted on the current inflation. Wow! That's a lot of money to reckon. However, much of his wealth was distributed for philanthropy. When he was not able to give away his fortune within his lifetime, he founded Carnegie Foundation to continue his philanthropic works.

Carnegie is instrumental in providing the truth about wealth. His essay, The Gospel of Wealth, provides an essence of the creation and building wealth. It stated that the rich men's role is to give a share of his wealth for the enrichment of the society.

I certainly agree to his view. Wealth is not about working for it until you have it in your hands and keeping it until you die. It is about making oneself rich so one can help other people, hence, making him instrumental in the wealth of other people.

Wealth is commonly perceived as material riches. Definitely, people want to become rich. Who wants to live in a miserable condition, anyway? I think the saintly people, perhaps. However, even those who want to become saints even claim that they are rich because of their love and faith to God. Thus, there is wealth in there, though not material.

Wealth is an abundant of one or two or more things. However, it should not be looked only in a material way. One can be rich in different ways and one may be wealthy in one thing. It should be noted too that wealth is not about having an absence of suffering. Even a person who is wealthy in one thing may also be suffering from another thing.

The purpose of building wealth is to create resources that can provide satisfaction. Wealth building could also be about creating power. But power comes with great responsibility. Wealthy person thus have social responsibility to help and impart their riches.
